Shutter Island
I don't mean this blog to be movie review blog… but I just can't help myself lately…
If you haven't seen the movie, you might want to see it before you read… just so you can enjoy it better…
I went and watch "Shutter Island" just now… this movie is very deep…. and I am very annoyed at author for writing such a difficult story!!! I don't know what to think… is Teddy insane or not?
I went to the movie not knowing what is the story all about… this movie had a twist that remind me of the film called "Shinning" with Jack Nicholson…
I wanted to believe that Teddy (DiCaprio) was sane marshals that tried to review the secret of shutter island… but the more I think of it, it makes more sense that he was actually insane…
Teddy/Andrew was insane… he will never leave the island because he can never let go of his past… therefore, he will never be cured to leave the island…
The movie was made in such a good way that it keeps me thinking… Anyway, that's the conclusion that I came up with… but I wonder what other people think of it….
Is Teddy sane or insane??????
Leonardo DiCaprio did a good job on this movie… I would give this movie 4.75 out of 5… Good twist…

Just came across your post as I was searching about Teddy being sane or not. I’ll be brief as I am at work but hope to post more about this later. Here is my brief take on it. Teddy didn’t know if he was sane or not by the end of the movie. We the viewers (at least some of us) don’t know if he is sane or not. What better identification with the protagonist than that! So maybe that is just what the director or author intended.

Thanks for the post Pete.
I suppose Teddy was not sure if he was insane or sane in the of the movie himself make sense too. With his very last comment…
I think I would need to watch again to make more sense of it all I guess… Wait for the DVD… hehe
Please go ahead and post more if you have any thought… I would like to hear more opinion on this.

Just saw the movie again. Paid extra attention for anything that might be a “smoking gun” re: sane or insane. Couldn’t find it. Don’t believe a lot of other posts about things such as there being two lighthouses, it wasn’t his gun or other sorts of B.S. (in my opinion). I lean strongly towards Teddy being insane (but sane at the end). Although the conspiracy/sane theory is possible. I learned once when faced with two equally plausible theories the simpler one is usually correct. Maybe, just like Teddy couldn’t accept that he murdered and killed, some viewers can’t accept their protagonist as a murderer, so they see a conspiracy.
I did notice the bandage on his head and that would be most consistent with him having the fight with the other patient two weeks earlier. The storm never happened. That was part of his delusion as Dr. Cawley mentions. That is why the final shot shows no storm damage. Although this could be taking place months later, their is no reason to conclude that. Once again the simpler explanations work better. Some say he didn’t hand his gun over in a holster and that it was Chuck’s gun in the end. Although he removed his gun quickly it did appear to be in a holster. The end with a shot of the lighthouse. So what? Doesn’t prove anything. Maybe Scorsese just wanted to feed the delusions of conspiracy buffs. Their is a fine line between conspiracy theories and delusions. Can you believe there are people who think the US was in on 911 and that men didn’t land on the moon. This movie shows how easy it is for people (characters and viewers) to distort reality. Now give me some Haldol!
